Yorkshire Pentathlon - A Thank You

The Yorkshire Region Committee would like to thank the staff of Queen Margaret School & Bishops Burton College, along with our country-wide volunteers who made the Yorkshire Pentathlon such a great success. The day could not have run without the generous help from two superb facilities and a great many people who traveled from all over the country, giving up their weekend to help create a fantastic atmosphere and a superb event.

We look forward to seeing all the athletes in competition again soon and would like to say congratulations to all who took part.

UIPM agrees testing programme for laser shooting in 2010

At the UIPM Congress in Copenhagen over the period 8-9 October 2009, the Congress agreed for a testing programme to be undertaken for laser shooting during the 2010 season with a view to implementing it, providing it is successful, for the Olympic Qualification programme starting in 2011.

A list of the agreed rule changes can be downloaded from here.

Pentathlon GB wins award for World Championships

Pentathlon GB has picked up an award for its organisation of the 2009 Modern Pentathlon World Championships at Crystal Palace.

The event was named the best overall modern pentathlon competition of 2009 by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), the sport's international federation. The award was announced at the UIPM's Congress in Copenhagen.

Peter Hart, Chief Executive of Pentathlon GB, said the plaudit was recognition of a huge team effort. 'We are delighted to win this award.' he said. 'Winning it is external recognition of the huge team effort by many people from the association and partners involved.

'We are now concentrating our resources in delivering a similarly successful event at the World Cup competition in Medway next year.'

UK Sport Event Consultant and 2009 World Championships Executive Committee member, Lucy Crickmore, added: "It was a pleasure working with Pentathlon GB in staging this World Championships, and UK Sport is delighted that the event has been recognized as world class by the modern pentathlon community.

"The volunteers and officials delivered an excellent World Championships, providing a fantastic competition experience for both athletes and spectators, which is crucial as we prepare for a home Games in 2012."

The 2009 World Championships the first World Championships held in an Olympic sport in London since 1986 took place at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre from 13-17 August.

It was the first Modern Pentathlon World Championships to feature the sport¹s new combined run/shoot format and the new two-athlete team relay.

Ten nations won medals at Crystal Palace, with the British trio of Heather Fell, Katy Livingston and Mhairi Spence winning silver in the women¹s team competition.

Schools Biathlon Entries - Postal Strike

If you have posted entry forms for the Schools Biathlon, or are about to post but are worried that your forms may be affected by the recent and ongoing strike action, we suggest the following:

FOR FORMS ALREADY POSTED:

Before calling the office, please first check the Accepted Entries Page.

Currently forms are being processed within 2 days of reaching the office. Should your school not appear there within a reasonable time (generally around 4 working days to allow for mail and processing) after posting please ensure you contact the office as soon as possible, preferably by email to admin@pentathlongb.org. Please include the names, school year and date of birth of the entrant(s) expected, the name of the school and any t-shirts ordered (size and amount).

FOR FORMS NOT YET POSTED:

Take a copy of all your paperwork before posting.

If strikes are causing major problems, please make sure you fax your School Approval form and Individual Entry & Membership forms to the following number: 01225 386995 with your contact details and the date of when the original documents and cheque were posted. Although faxes are not actual entries and priority in the case of venue capacity is always given to original forms received with payment, we will try to ensure entries genuinely affected by the strike are not rejected as late.

We CAN accept faxes or scanned and emailed copies as actual entries if they are accompanied by a credit/debit card payment, which can be taken by phone if you prefer not to email or fax this information

Please DO NOT:

Send items by registered mail. Guaranteed Next Day Delivery is fine, but registered mail requires a signature and frequently goes astray as we are based on a large university campus.

Send cash, especially coins. It usually goes missing, along with your entry.

Delay getting in touch with us - if your entry does not appear on the website, contact us as soon as a reasonable time for receipt has passed. There is only a very short amount of time after a closing date in which we can sort out any issues. We cannot accept late entries, regardless of the reason, and proof of postage is not proof of receipt.

Put the wrong postage on your envelope. Even under normal circumstances this can add another week to us receiving the item.

Drug Information Database

In January 2009 the Drug Information Database (DID) was suspended. We are pleased to be able announce that UK Sport has joined forces with their counterparts in the USA and Canada to launch a new service – Global Drug Reference Online (Global DRO). The new system is now operational and can be accessed at: www.globaldro.co.uk

Global DRO is a long-term replacement for the previous reference tool, the Drug Information Database™ (DID) and provides a quick and easy means by which athletes and support personnel can check the status of medications based on the current World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. The new system retains many of the core functions from the Drug Information Database with the ability to check the status of branded medications and individual active ingredients as well as providing every search with a unique reference number.

Global DRO will be updated regularly to include new products entering the marketplace or to adjust for changes in status, and all data will be fully verified by pharmacists experienced in the field of anti-doping.

Golden Years

Mickey Ellis, Barry Lillywight and Andy Archibald organised a very popular and successful ‘Golden Years’ reunion on 25 September at the Petersfield Golf Club. Over 30 members attended. Against a backdrop of photographs from the last five decades we looked forward to London 2012. All in all the evening was a great success, and we are very grateful to Mickey and his team for organising it.

New Biathlon/Triathlon Rules

The British Modern Biathlon and British Modern Triathlon Rules effective 1st June 2009 are now available for download. They can be downloaded in Word or PDF format.

Pentathlon GB adopts new anti-doping rules

Pentathlon GB has adopted a new set of anti-doping rules, called the UK Anti-Doping Rules.

The new rules have been developed by UK Sport and adopted by most sporting governing bodies to ensure that anti-doping regulations are consistent across different sports.

The UK Anti-Doping Rules comply with a new worldwide WADA anti-doping code, which came into effect on 1 January 2009, which is applicable to all international and national governing bodies.

Everyone who competes internationally or in Senior or junior National or Selection competition falls under the new anti-doping rules, and could therefore potentially be tested both in and out of competition. If a pentathlete is suspected of doping, they could be visited by an anti-doping officer at any time.

For under-18s, parental consent forms which are part of a licence application include details of anti-doping procedures: it is important that parents take note of this information.

Changes

The biggest change that will affect the most athletes is regarding Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs). These are required by any pentathlete using a prohibited substance or method for a legitimate medical condition. Anyone taking part in domestic non-international/national/selection events does not need to apply for a TUE unless they are subject to an anti-doping test, in which case they are given 10 working days to obtain an exemption. Athletes who have been notified that they are in a registered testing pool need an exemption prior to competing.

The majority of people that this affects are people with asthma. The traditional abbreviated TUEs have now been discontinued. Therefore athletes who use blue inhalers will need to apply for a TUE, and will also have to prove that their medication improves their breathing by 12% or more. These athletes should, in the first instance, speak to their doctor who may, in turn refer them to an asthma clinic to carry out the appropriate tests. Athletes with any questions should contact Pentathlon GB Headquarters.

Athletes with asthma who use a brown (corticosteroid) inhaler no longer need to apply for a TUE, but do need to declare its use to UK Sport. This can be done online.

Any athlete taking medication is advised to check that their medication is not a banned substance with 100%ME. A full list is available on the 100%ME website.

The new rules mean that anti-doping testing procedures have also been changed. Athletes have to wash and dry hands or wear gloves before providing a urine sample, and wear gloves during the division of a sample - measures both designed to prevent the contamination of samples. Urine sample sizes have now also been standardised across different sports at 90ml.

Disciplinary hearings

Where a case is taken to a disciplinary hearing, Pentathlon GB will no longer assemble the hearing panel. Instead the panel will be put together by the government appointed National Anti-Doping Panel. The aim of this is to ensure that there is an experienced panel of independent legal and sporting specialists to sit on the panel and to ensure that there is consistency of penalties across different sports - something which has not always been the case in the past.

Also, there is more flexibility with penalties in some areas so that if, for example, an athlete is supplying banned substances as well as taking them, the penalty can be made appropriate.

Over the next few years, there will be a new anti-doping organisation created in the UK which is independent of UK Sport. It will have links to the police in order to more effectively tackle the supply chain of banned substances

Pentathlon GB Competition Programme and Selection Policy 2009 - The New Format

Pentathlon GB and other National Federations around the World are facing challenging times to manage the transitional process from the traditional format for running and shooting to the new territory of the Combined Event.

This document sets out some important information about this transition which you are encouraged to download.

For a video preview of the combined format click here.

Format for Modern Pentathlon at the Olympics to change.

At the UIPM CONGRESS on 21 - 23 November 2008 at Antigua, Guatemala, Congress approved a motion to change the format of the Modern Pentathlon from five individual disciplines of shooting, fencing, swimming, show jumping and running to one that will combine the running and shooting disciplines. This will come into effect from January 2009 and will be used at the London 2012 Olympics.

Anthony Temple QC, Chairman of Pentathlon GB said, “We will make the best of this decision in preparing for the World Championships in August 2009 at Crystal Palace and for London 2012.”

International Coaches Conference

Some 70 coaches from around the world attended the 1st International Modern Pentathlon Coaches Conference held in Bath, England over 24th – 26th October 2008. Including the home nations, 18 countries were represented. A group of top presenters were available to speak and generate debate on subjects covering swimming a 200m freestyle faster, swim biomechanics, the talent ID system in GBR, strength and conditioning, endurance running, fencing, an alternative approach to running the 1 day format shooting. A member of the English Football Assc gave us a comparison between dealing with elite performers in football with elite performers in Modern Pentathlon.

Coaches attending the International Coaches Conference, Bath - October 2008

Bath, the home of GB Modern Pentathlon, provided excellent facilities and accommodation which was appreciated by all that attended the conference. Chairman of the UIPM Technical Committee, Mauro Tirinnanzi, said that it was a huge success and he was pleased with the initiative by GBR.

Progress and the AGM

Pentathlon GB’s AGM took place on Saturday 25 October. The AGM was an opportunity for members to hear and celebrate some excellent good news. In addition to our Olympic success, membership of the Association has risen from about 3,200 at this time last year to a current 4,200 and rising, a welcome further increase on which, as our Chairman pointed out, we must build.

The nominations for Board membership were unopposed. We are far from encouraging hotly contested elections, but the Board is always on the lookout for new members who are willing to give their time and abilities in the interest of the sport.

The meeting adopted the revised Memorandum and Articles of Association, a copy of which is now available for download and which brings our corporate framework in line with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006.

All in all the AGM heard of and enjoyed the considerable progress we have made in the last year in our sport.

Parade of Heroes

The four members of Great Britain¹s Beijing 2008 modern pentathlon team joined Olympic and Paralympic athletes in the Parade of Heroes in London on Thursday (16th October).

Heather Fell, Katy Livingston, Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge were among some 350 British Olympic and Paralympic athletes taking part in the parade.

Many thousands of people lined the streets of London to applaud the achievements of British athletes in Beijing. The parade ran from the Mansion House in the City to a celebration event in Trafalgar Square.

The Olympians, along with members of their coaching teams, then went on to Buckingham Palace to attend a reception hosted by the Queen.

Heather said: "It's been a whirlwind since Beijing. Coming to the parade has to make any athlete think about London 2012."

Sam added: "It was a fantastic day. Everyone seemed so proud and excited. It was great to be a part of it and to see the pride on people's faces."

The parade also provided athletes with an opportunity to renew friendships they had struck up with athletes from other sports in Beijing.

Britain's modern pentathletes maintained the country's outstanding track record in the sport in Beijing. Heather won the silver medal while Katy finished seventh. Sam and Nick became the first British male pentathletes to compete at an Olympic Games since 1996, with Sam finishing 10th and Nick 25th.

Among the athletes from other sports taking part in the parade were cyclist Chris Hoy, a triple gold medallist in Beijing, double swimming gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and Paralympic equestrian triple gold medallist Lee Pearson.

Pentathlon – Past and Future Generations

Sometime’s it’s the family silver, and sometimes you just inherit your dad’s nose. But in the case of one family, a passion for Pentathlon has definitely been passed down in the genes.

With Peter & Emma Young warming up for competition at the Youth Pentathlon Championships in Solihull last weekend, an old picture came to light of the 1935 Modern Pentathlon Championship of Great Britain, featuring none other than their Great-Uncle, Major Gerald Astley-Cooper. Sadly, he didn’t take the individual prize that year, being, we imagine, pipped at the post by Lt CPD Legard of 5th Innis D.G (according to the trophy in the office).

The photograph was, we think, taken at Wellington College and if anybody can identify any of the other participants or shed any more light on this fantastic item of Pentathlon history, we’d love to hear from you at admin@pentathlongb.org. The seal at the top of the photo reads ‘Royal Military College’, which could possibly be Sandhurst, but Wellington also had strong military connections.

We are, of course, all sure the Major would be very proud of his grand-niece & nephews choice of sport."

Steph Cook receives Honorary Degree

Dr Stephanie Cook, the former Olympic, World and European champion modern pentathlete, has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Bath.

Dr Cook was presented with a Doctor of Medicine during a graduation ceremony at Bath Abbey.

Steph Cook receives Honorary Degree

It was a particularly moving moment for Dr Cook, who spent two years training at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre at the University of Bath at the height of her sporting success. “I’m honoured and delighted to receive this honorary degree,” she said. “Bath will always have a special place in my heart for everything it did for me during my career as a modern pentathlete.

“I had a terrific team behind me in Bath which enabled me to achieve all that I did and it proved once again that collectively a group can achieve so much more than an individual.”

Dr Cook also praised the University’s outstanding sports facilities that helped her and so many other athletes achieve their full potential.

Steph Cook receives Honorary Degree

Dr Cook became the first woman to win modern pentathlon gold at Sydney 2000, when the women’s event made its Olympic debut.

The British modern pentathlete added the European Championship crown in Bulgaria in 2001 and followed that up by winning gold at the World Championships at Millfield in Somerset. That made her one of the few athletes in any sport to have held the Olympic, World and European titles at the same time – a feat all the more remarkable given that her sport features five different disciplines.

University of Bath Chancellor Lord Tugendhat presented the honorary degree to Dr Cook, following an oration by Dr Dylan Thompson, a senior lecturer at the University’s School for Health. He praised Dr Cook’s achievements in mastering five different sporting disciplines to such a high level and showing the same dedication in her new career as a doctor. Dr Cook has worked as a hospital consultant and is currently training to be a GP.

Although no longer competing as an athlete, Dr Cook hasn’t lost her ties with sport – she is currently a member of the Sports Advisory Group for the London 2012 Organising Committee and was a founder member of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
