At the UIPM Congress on 21 - 23 November 2008 at Antigua, Guatemala, Congress approved a motion to change the format of the Modern Pentathlon from five individual disciplines of shooting, fencing, swimming, show jumping and running to one that will combine the running and shooting disciplines. This will come into effect from January 2009 and will be used at the London 2012 Olympics.

Anthony Temple QC, Chairman of Pentathlon GB said, "We will make the best of this decision in preparing for the World Championships in August 2009 at Crystal Palace and for London 2012.”
