Fell adds World Cup Final silver to Olympic silver posted by Steve Ballinger on05-10-2008
British modern pentathlete Heather Fell added the World Cup Final silver medal in Portugal on Saturday (4th October) to her Beijing 2008 Olympic Games silver medal.
Compatriot Katy Livingston, seventh in Beijing, finished just outside the medals in fourth, with Mhairi Spence sixth in another outstanding day for British pentathletes.
The three Brits were among 28 athletes from 16 nations taking part in the competition in Caldas da Rainha.
And they marked the end of a long, hard season by taking half of the top-sixth places.
Fell was sixth after the 10m air pistol shoot with a score of 185 from a possible 200 for 1156 modern pentathlon points. Livingston was 16th (176 for 1048 points) and Spence 15th (177 for 1060 points).
Fell’s 14 victories in the fencing earned her another 840 points, with both Livingston and Spence adding 872 points to their tally with 15 wins each.
Despite only recently returning to training after the Olympics, Fell produced the fastest time of the day for the 200m freestyle swim – 2:10.96 – for another 1352 points to climb to second place overall with two events remaining.
Spence also produced a strong performance – her time of 2:13.36 was second fastest, earning 1320 points. Livingston also swam well, producing a 2:14.53, the seventh quickest time for 1308 points. Latvia’s Elena Rublevska led the field at this stage.
The Latvian was one of four riders to go clear in the show jumping for the maximum 1200 points, to keep her at the head of the leaderboard.
Lithuanian’s Donata Rimsaite also went clear to leapfrog Fell into second. Fell meanwhile, had 56 penalties to drop to third overall.
Spence and Livingston also produced solid performances in the equestrian element, Spence dropping just 20 points for 1180 and Livingston 56 for 1144.
Going into the final discipline, the 3k run, Rublevska had build up enough points to start 25 seconds ahead of Rimsaite, with Fell a further two seconds back.
Rimsaite overtook Rublevska on the first lap and then led to the end to take gold, with Fell then also catching the Latvian to round off her terrific 2008 with a World Cup Final silver. She clocked a time of 10:41.76 for the run for 1156 points.
Livingston’s 10:49.63 took her into fourth – she couldn’t quite do enough to catch Rublevska and add a World Cup Final medal to her World Championship bronze earlier this year.
Spence’s 11:18.96 meant she finished the day in sixth overall – equalling her position at last year’s World Cup Final in Beijing.
Lena Schoneborn, Germany’s Beijing 2008 Olympic gold medallist, came ninth overall.
2008 World Cup Final results
Gold: Donata Rimsaite (LTU) 5692 points
Silver: Heather Fell (GBR) 5648 points
Bronze: Elena Rublevska (LAT) 5552 points
4th: Katy Livingston (GBR) 5496 points
6th: Mhairi Spence (GBR) 5440 points

Olympic medallist Fell returns to action at World Cup Final posted by Steve Ballinger on01-10-2008
Heather Fell, Britain’s Beijing 2008 Olympic silver medal winning modern pentathlete, returns to action in the World Cup Final in Portugal on Saturday (4th October).
The 25-year-old from Devon competes in her first pentathlon since Beijing in the event at Caldas da Rainha. It’s the first time she has contested a World Cup Final – qualification is achieved by the accumulation of results at World Cup events throughout the year, up to a maximum of three pentathletes per country.
Fell is one of three British women competing in Portugal this weekend. She is joined by 24-year-old Katy Livingston, who finished seventh at the Beijing Olympics and won the individual bronze at the World Championships in Budapest in May.
23-year-old Mhairi Spence, bronze medallist at the 2006 European Championships and sixth at last year’s World Cup Final in Beijing, completes the British trio in action this weekend.
At the end of a long, hard season culminating in the Beijing Olympics, it’s thought some of the top pentathletes from around the world may not compete at the World Cup Final.
Fell has recently returned to training following a break after the Olympics and said she’s looking forward to Portugal.
“This is the last competition of a very long season with a lot of pressure, so it’s nice to have a competition that hasn’t got so much riding on it,” she said.
“I’ve never been to a World Cup Final before, so I’m looking for to it,” she added.
Jan Bartu, GB performance director, said: “This event hasn’t really been a priority for us at the end of a long season, but it’s an opportunity for the girls to go out and have a relaxed competition.
“They’re not at a peak compared with the Olympics, but from their standard of performance throughout the year, I’d expect them to compete at a decent level and go for the top places.”

Well this evening bring us to the close of the 2008 Youth A World Championship here in Albena Bulgaria and we finished it off in true style by taking another medal in the relay event. The 3 girls competed excellent all day to end up standing on the podium to receive the silver medal. Medal Talley Rises at Yth A Worlds posted by WCDP Manager on21-09-2008
This morning saw the Combined Event start in not the best conditions, raining on and off but with the gazebo type cover over the firing point there was never any doubt that it wouldn't go ahead. It seems that all the athletes took part. For those that don"t know the format, the athletes have scores from individual competition in fencing and swimming added together and an handicap start then for a shoot and run combined. Whilst promoted as a separate event and World Championship status with individual and team titles at stake, it is still to go to congress for acceptance or otherwise.
All that said the British athletes were well placed to make more medals after the fence and swim during the individual competition. The girls as a team performed very well and finished in Bronze medal position. Freyja was very competitive throughout and had she not struggled with one set of targets would have given an individual medal. Lydia did her usual and run the field down but started too far back to make an impression on the first 3. Kate was impressive and played an important part in the team medal. Results will be on the Bulgarian website, with times etc etc.

The boys started in a seriously good position, James was in 3rd, Jack in 7th, Steven 13th and Daniel 30th . Steven was the individual as same team from individual event had to start the combined event. James was unable to hold onto 3rd place through the event but had a good competition, Jack did well but as with James had trouble with some of the targets. Daniel ran brilliant and will have made ground on the main group, he started in the 1st detail. Steven started in 13th and had a reasonable 1st shoot, ran 2.48 for 1st km, this brought him through to top ten, followed by good shoot and run for 2nd km he went into the 3rd shoot knowing that if he could knock them down he would challenge for a medal. He left the range for final km in 9th place and ran the perfect km coming onto the field from the roads in 4th place but the Russian ahead of him was never going to give up that place, Steven had other ideas and drew next to him, sat there until very last bend and then outcome was inevitable, one last effort and Steven took the individual bronze.
This now gives us 11 medals from this world championship with relays to go tomorrow.
