British Schools' Modern Biathlon & World Schools Biathlon

 Schools Biathlon 2011

Pentathlon GB organises a wide range of multi sport competitions each year in various combinations of the five disciplines that comprise the Modern Pentathlon;

  • Modern Biathlon swim - run
  • Biathle continuous run-swim-run
  • Modern Triathlon swim - run - shoot
  • Modern Tetrathlon swim - run - shoot (or combined run/shoot) - fence
  • Modern Pentathlon swim - run - shoot (or combined run/shoot) - fence - ride

The Schools' Modern Biathlon (swim-run) comprises a 50m swim and 500m run for Year 5 to Year 7 pupils and Teachers and a 100m swim and 1000m run for Years 8 to 12/13. Points are awarded for each discipline and final positions are decided by the total number of points achieved after both disciplines. There is also a team element to the competition as the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class will count as a team. Schools may have more than one team in a class.

Pentathlon GB firmly believes the Schools' Modern Biathlon offers young people of all abilities a fantastic opportunity to participate in multi-sport in an enjoyable, safe and competitive environment. Because of the ever-increasing popularity of these events, we introduced a new format in 2011 which encouraged the involvement of 30% more athletes at 'grass root' level than in the previous year. The 12 qualifying competitions traditionally run in November and December were replaced with an electronic submission of validated run and swim times. We converted these times to points and created ranking lists for four semi-final championships which were scheduled in early 2012. The series will culminate in the British Championships at Crystal Palace on 25th March 2012.

The run and swim times submitted together with the results from the semi-finals and finals will be sent for inclusion on the World Schools' Biathlon Rankings List maintained by UIPM. Last year's results can be accessed here.

Young athletes at the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships competed in 16 different classes, based on school year and gender. They range from year 5 through to year 12/13 – and there’s also a competition for teachers.

Some of Britain’s brightest young multi-sport prospects have competed in the British Schools’ Biathlon Championships in the past. Jamie Cooke, for instance, came fifth in the year 12/13 boys' final in 2008 – he went on to win the Modern Pentathlon World Junior Championships in Argentina in November.

All of the competitors took part in a run and a swim, with a gap between them, like in the modern pentathlon, rather than in sequence, as in the triathlon.  The athletes tackle a 50m swim and a 500m run or a 100m swim and 1000m run, depending on their age group.

There were also opportunities to take part in fencing and shooting taster sessions.

You can find a full set of results at: https://www.pentathlongb.org/schools/index.php?tab=5

And regional round-ups will be posted shortly at https://www.pentathlongb.org/pentathlongb/ukstructure.php

Schools Biathlon Championships on Facebook and Twitter Saturday, 24th Mar 2012 John Woodbridge

Almost 900 young people from across the country will begin to converge on Crystal Palace today in readiness for the British Schools Biathlon Championships which takes place tomorrow.

Athletes will also have the opportunity to try fencing and laser shooting, two of the other disciplines of Modern Pentathlon, at ‘taster’ sessions.

Find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter as we cover the day’s event.

Young athletes prepare to tackle Schools Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace Monday, 19th Mar 2012 Steve Ballinger

Hundreds of young athletes will converge on the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre at the weekend to battle it out for honours at the British Schools Biathlon Championships.

Around 900 athletes from around the country will take part in the championships finals on Sunday (25 March).

The annual competition is organised by Pentathlon GB, the national governing body for the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon, and one of its goals is to encourage more young people to participate in multi-sport competitions.

The championships are the climax of a series of semi-finals around the country. Young athletes compete in 16 different classes, based on school year and gender. They range from year five through to year 12/13 – and there’s also a competition for teachers.

Some of Britain’s brightest young multi-sport prospects have competed in the British Schools’ Biathlon Championships in the past. They will also have opportunities to have a go at fencing and shooting sessions.

Sue Hyde, Pentathlon GB’s National Competitions and Events Manager, said: “The Schools Biathlon Championships provide a fantastic opportunity for young people to participate in a multi-sports challenge

“In an Olympic year, it’s particularly important for modern pentathlon that we try to inspire young people and encourage them to take part in the sport,” she added.  “Britain has an impressive track record in modern pentathlon, and it’s possible some of the young people competing at Crystal Palace on Sunday will go on to represent Great Britain in the sport at a future Olympic Games.”

The action gets underway at 9.30am and the last of the finals should be completed by 5pm.

Reports of the championships will features on the Pentathlon GB website at www.pentathlongb.org

And you can also keep up to date during the day with the championships via Pentathlon GB’s new Facebook site at www.facebook.com/PentathlonGB and also via Twitter at www.twitter.com/PentathlonGB.  Shortly after the event we will be posting a video of the event on our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/pentathlongb

Pentathlon GB South is hosting its next Regional Developement Training Camp at Lord Wandsworth College, Long Sutton. The camp is on Wednesday 6th June - Friday 8th June and will be from 0930-1515 each day.

The camp will consist of Running, Swimming, Fencing and Shooting (static and combined) and the aim of the camp is to develop each individual as an all round Pentathlete. For those of you who have not tried all the sports involved in Modern Pentathlon this is a great opportunity to give them ago.

Each day will consist of 1 hour of running, 1 hour of fencing, 1 hour of shooting and 1 hour of swimming. The three days will be very tiring, however we believe in a quality not quantity. This training schedule will ensure the camp is very rewarding for all the athletes attending.

Schools Biathlon Rules

The rules for the Schools Biathlon series of events are available from the Resources page.

In summary, the principles of the competition is as follows:

  • each school year group competes separately apart from Years 12 and 13 who compete together.
  • the run and swim are completed separately, ie it is not a continuous run/swim
  • distances vary depending on year group, but Years 5,6 and 7 and Teachers run 500m and swim 50m, remaining year groups run 1000m and swim 100m.
  • scoring is based on run and swim times being converted to points. Each year group has to acheive a target time to gain 1000 points. Times faster or slower than the target time result in an increase or decrease in points. See the rule book on the Resources page for the details.

The rules are detailed and should be read and understood before competing.

Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships - Crystal Palace - 25 March

The provisional timetable for the Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships to be held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on 25th March can be found here. Registration times will not change, but there may be slight alterations to timetabling so check the times of your events in the programme issued at Registration.

Please remember that the clocks go forward by one hour on Saturday night!!

There is a café at the Sports Centre but with over 1200 athletes, teachers, parents and spectators onsite we expect this to get exceptionally busy especially at peak periods. We therefore strongly suggest that you bring lunch, snacks and drinks with you, but please deposit any rubbish in the bins provided or take it away with you.

The Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon comprises the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. Our schools biathlon programme recognises the need for a fun and simple introduction to our sport so to give you an insight to some of our other disciplines and to widen your sporting horizons, we are offering the opportunity to take part in our 'taster' shooting and fencing sessions at the Schools' Biathlon Championships.

You will be able to 'sign up' for the shooting and fencing 'taster' sessions (which will run throughout the day) at the information desk. However, if you would like to express your interest to take part in either the 10am 'taster' shooting session or fencing session, please could you email Gill Measures – gillmeasures@googlemail.com. The cost for each session is £2 so please have the correct money available on the day. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

A list of schools which have entered the Schools' Biathlon Championships and the membership numbers of the competitors entered from each of those schools is available further down this page.

All athletes presented with awards at the Championships will be offered an ‘automatic’ bye’ entry to the British Modern Biathlon Championships to be held on 13th May in Birmingham. Here the competition results will be used to identify athletes who have potential to attain the consideration standards for the English Talent Pool.

Please ensure that you are familiar with the Schools' Modern Biathlon Rules before competing as our rules differ from those of the ASA. These can be accessed here.

Facebook & Twitter

For the first time we will be updating our Facebook page during the Schools Biathlon Championships. We will also be providing a Twitter feed – follow us and all the action at www.twitter.com/pentathlongb. Schools' Biathlon Championships 2012 - Ranking Lists

Pentathlon GB received nearly 6,000 entries for consideration for the 4 Semi Final Championships which were all due to be held in early 2012. The Bath and Macclesfield competitions went ahead as planned, but unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions the competitions due to be held at Crystal Palace and Leeds on 5th February had to be cancelled.

The submitted run and swim times for athletes entered into the Crystal Palace and Leeds competitions have been used to create two 'virtual' competitions from which the top 6 individuals and top team have qualified by right to the British Championships. The results from the two competitions that went ahead (Bath and Macclesfield) are on the website and again, the top 6 individuals and top team have qualified by right.

A ranking list for the British Championships has now been produced and can be viewed by clicking the link below. When compiling the rankings list, adjustments were made to swim times achieved in 25m pools.

In addition to the 4 teams that have qualified by right, additional teams have been invited to make up the total number of teams in each class to:

  1. Seven teams in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8.
  2. Five teams in Year 9
  3. Four teams in Year 10, Year 11 & Year 12/13.

The remaining places for British Championships have been allocated from the individual ranking list to make up the total number of athletes in each Class to:

  1. 72 athletes in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8
  2. 56 athletes in Year 9
  3. 40 athletes in Year 10, Year 11 & Year 12/13
  4. All teachers

Entries must be made online and will open on 10th February 2012. You will need to log into the website (login on the home page) using the user name and password created when entering athletes for the Semi Final competitions. If you have forgotten your password, click on the 'Forgotten Password' link on the login page. You will be required to enter your membership number - please note this is the membership number of the person submitting entries, which was sent to you on the email advising you of qualifiers for the Semi Finals. As part of the process for creating a new password you will be reminded of your user name.

The entry fee for each athlete is £20. There is no entry fee for teams. Commemorative Championships T-shirts (in Royal Blue) can also be ordered at £9 each.

If you enter online but choose to pay by cheque later, please make cheques payable to 'Pentathlon GB' and ensure they arrive before the closing date, 5th March. A single cheque must be submitted for the full amount of your entries.

After you have entered you will be able to check that your entries have been received on the 'Competition Entries' tab of the Schools section of the website.

The closing date is 5th March and will be strictly adhered to.

Competitors have qualified by their individual performance or by being a member of a team. Competitors who have qualified by their individual performance have a 'Q' against their name. Team members appear with a ‘QT’ against their name. Some competitors have qualified as both individuals and as members of a team and appear as ‘Q, QT’. Where the last qualified athlete had the same adjusted total as others below, then all athletes with that adjusted total have been invited.

Please note - Team Entries!

Team qualifiers must enter as full teams. So, when making your entries, if you cannot make a full team of 3 people who have QT against their name, the competitors will not be able to enter the competition unless they have also qualified as an individual (ie they have a Q against their name).

At the British Championships, all qualifying team members will be re-designated as individual entries. This means that if a school has more than three individuals in the same class competing in the Championships, the top three scores will be taken into account when compiling the team results. This is irrespective of whether individuals qualified as Q or QT. This might mean that the team members change from the qualifying competition.

Question

{Question}

Answer

{Answer}

Question Answer
Does the school have to pay any affiliation fees? No, the school does not have to pay any affiliation or club membership fees.
What are the distances? Years 5, 6 and 7 (and Teachers) - Swim 50m, Run 500m. Years 8,9,10,11, 12/13 - Swim 100m, Run 1000m
Is the run/swim continuous? No. The run and swim are separate with no transition. There is generally a break of around 40 mins between the disciplines, giving the athletes time to get changed and report to thier next event. This makes it ideal for athletes who are not familiar with multisports and transition areas.
I don't have my 'School ID Number' - will this affect my entry? No, the School ID Number is one we use at the office. If you school is new or you don't have your number, don't worry. Just send the form in and we'll do the rest.
Are the classes mixed? No. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the classes are by Age and Gender, so Year 6 Girls, Year 6 Boys, etc, are separate.
How is the final place decided? The athlete is awarded so many 'Pentathlon Points' for their Run and Swim times. These points are added together to give the final place.
Do the children have to be members of Pentathlon GB? Yes, each child has to be a member. However by sending in the 'Individual Entry and Membership form' with both the membership and competition entry fee, they are automatically made members for a year, so you don't have to do anything extra.
Does the school need to send a teacher? No, a parent can attend instead. Only one representative from each school should report to registration to collect all of the information for that school.
We haven't received any details in the post... We don't post out details as we found it wasn't reliable. Please check the website for a list of entries received. Details of the competition times will be put up on the website approximately one week after the closing date of the competition. Being on the website makes it easier for both parents and teachers to check the details.
We don't have a team, does this matter? Not at all - all the children are entered initially as individuals and, if there are enough from the school in their class, may be made up into a team depending on their score. However, they all start as individuals.
How many can we enter per class? As many or few as you wish. We welcome one or a hundred. The only limit is the maximum venue capacity!
My school requires an invoice/receipt... Please contact the office as soon as you can and we will arrange this for you. Our number is 01225 386808 and the email is admin@pentathlongb.org
Can you accept entries by fax or scanned and emailed? No, for the 2012 series of Schools' Biathlon competitions all entries must be made online, athough payment may be made by cheque after you have completed the online entries. Please note however, if you choose to pay by cheque, will not be accepted into the competition unless we receive the cheque at Pentathlon GB HQ, Wessex House (6.2), University of Bath, Bath. BA2 7AY by the closing date. If your cheque does not arrive by the closing date your competitors will not be able to compete and you will not be able to transfer your entries to another competition.
How do I check if my entry has been received? Go to the website www.pentathlongb.org and click on the 'Schools' Tab at the top right. Look for the 'Competition Entries' tab where you will be able to see the entries recieved.
I've just been handed a form, etc, but it's past the closing date... We're very sorry, but we cannot take late entries under any circumstances and for any reason. This is not a negotiable position.
I've got my registration time but I might be late. Does it matter if I'm not there exactly on time? The registration times are when the registration for your class opens. However we strongly recommend you are there as close to time as possible as you will need around 30 - 40 minutes before your first event starts to get parked, registered, sort out where you are going, get changed and report in to the marshals.
Where do I get my run numbers and program? They are all in the Registration Pack when you arrive at the venue. Registration is alphabetically by School, and we ask that one designated person collects the pack.
We've ordered a t-shirt - where do we collect it? T-shirt slips are in the Registration Pack (one per school, collected on the day of competition at Registration, by the designated adult) - you will be able to then exchange these slips for your t-shirt at a nearby table. Please do not lose the slip as we do not carry extra! You can collect the t-shirt anytime after you've picked up your slip from registration.
Do I have to buy a t-shirt? No, it's entirely optional. Please remember though that we do not sell extra shirts on the day, so if you would like one, you need to order and pay for it when you send your entry form in.
Is there a cafe at the venue? All the venues have either cafes, snack bars or dispensing machines, BUT they do frequently get very busy. We strongly recommend that people take food and drink with them, as spending the time between disciplines queueing is not ideal.
