British Schools' Modern Biathlon & World Schools Biathlon

 Schools Biathlon 2011

Pentathlon GB organises a wide range of multi sport competitions each year in various combinations of the five disciplines that comprise the Modern Pentathlon;

  • Modern Biathlon swim - run
  • Biathle continuous run-swim-run
  • Modern Triathlon swim - run - shoot
  • Modern Tetrathlon swim - run - shoot (or combined run/shoot) - fence
  • Modern Pentathlon swim - run - shoot (or combined run/shoot) - fence - ride

The Schools' Modern Biathlon (swim-run) comprises a 50m swim and 500m run for Year 5 to Year 7 pupils and Teachers and a 100m swim and 1000m run for Years 8 to 12/13. Points are awarded for each discipline and final positions are decided by the total number of points achieved after both disciplines. There is also a team element to the competition as the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class will count as a team. Schools may have more than one team in a class.

Pentathlon GB firmly believes the Schools' Modern Biathlon offers young people of all abilities a fantastic opportunity to participate in multi-sport in an enjoyable, safe and competitive environment. Because of the ever-increasing popularity of these events, we introduced a new format in 2011 which encouraged the involvement of 30% more athletes at 'grass root' level than in the previous year. We intend to continue with this format for the 2012-13 series of competitions but with a few improvements based upon our own experience and the results of our survey conducted at the Schools Finals.

The majority of respondents to the survey would like us to align the run and swim distances with our traditional competitions. This is a significant change and therefore a decision on this will be deferred until the 2013-14 season.

To see how the competition will run in 2012-13 click on the 2012-13 season tab.

British Schools' Modern Biathlon Series 2012-13

 Schools Biathlon 2011

The following paragraphs set out the procedures for the 2012-13 season. If, after reading it thoroughly, you have any questions, please check the FAQ section of the website.

  1. As in 2011-12 Schools/Clubs/Parents/Athletes/Coaches will be invited to submit validated run and swim times for school age athletes and teachers residing or attending a School in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for FREE inclusion to any one of three semi-final rankings lists. Times will be converted to points and rankings lists created for three Semi-Final Championships to be held in early 2013.
  2. The website is now open to take validated run and swim times. The closing date for online submission of run and swim times is 16th November 2012. Please click here to register and submit times, although you are advised to read the rest of this page first.
  3. Pentathlon Scotland will be organising their own Championships for athletes who attend schools in Scotland (visit www.pentathlon-scotland.org for details) and the results will be included on the rankings list for the British Championships. Athletes will be invited to compete in the British Championships on merit with no individual or teams qualifying by right.
  4. Semi-Finals will take place at Crystal Palace (20th January, 2013), Millfield School (27th January, 2013) and Macclesfield Leisure Centre (27th January, 2013). The series will culminate in the British Championships at Crystal Palace on 24th March 2013.
Entry to the semi-finals will be £20 (£13 for existing members at date of competition). Entry to the Championships in March will be £25.
  5. Pentathlon GB Regional Officers will organise a number of events for athletes attending schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to obtain run and swim times which they can then submit to their chosen semi-finals rankings list. These events may take the form of a competition or a time trial and will be organised between 1st June and 11th November.
  6. Schools and Clubs may enter one of the Pentathlon GB events or organise their own competition or time trials within the same time frame. Times can be achieved at an inter-schools or intra school competition or more informally during games/PE lessons or at 'after schools' clubs. Athletes may also ask their run and swim club to validate times on behalf of the school. Run and swim times do not have to be achieved on the same day.
  7. Please ensure that the athlete submits times for the distances appropriate for the school year that they will be entering in September 2012. This will affect Year 7 pupils moving into Year 8 in September 2012.
  8. All swim times must be achieved in either 25m or 50m pools. These will be converted by Pentathlon GB to the pool length of the semi-final competition.
  9. Run times can be achieved on track or grass, however there should be every effort to ensure that the proposed run route is level and that the correct distance is measured. There will be no allowances made for runs completed on grass or weather conditions due to the huge variances of both.
  10. Those wishing to submit times from an ASA licenced meet and attend a Pentathlon GB organised time trial to obtain a run time will be allowed to do so.
  11. Please do not submit times that cannot be verified and please do not embarrass your child or your school by submitting unrealistic times. We reserve the right to check the validity of any time submitted.
  12. Years 10 & 11 will be combined as will Years 12 & 13.
  13. The concept of 'virtual' teams qualifying automatically from the initial rankings list was confusing to new entrants to the Schools' Biathlon programme, especially as this sometimes resulted in athletes further down the rankings list being selected for the next stage. Therefore the qualification process to the semi-finals will be simplified by accepting the top athletes (see below for the number of qualification places) from the times submitted for each age group, introducing the team element of qualification only for those qualifying from the semi-finals to the Championship final.
  14. Once run and swim times have been achieved, Schools/Clubs/Parents/Athletes/Coaches will be required to enter athletes online, onto one of the three semi-final rankings lists. The website will be ready to take the entries from 1st September. To allow schools more time to organise permission slips for qualified athletes prior to the Christmas break, the closing date for entry to the semi-finals rankings lists has been brought forward to 16th November 2012.

Online entry process for submission of run and swim times to the semi-final rankings lists
  1. The entry process will be simplified so that anyone can enter one or more athletes for consideration for the semi-final competitions. Entry will not be limited to school contacts.
  2. The entry process will be simple and consistent for all entrants regardless of whether they attend an event organised by Pentathlon GB or gain their times at another event. Any individual would;
    1. Register and create a login (or just login if they already have a login)
    2. Select the school to be represented
    3. Select the semi-final for which the entries are to be considered
    4. Enter the following data:
      1. First Name
      2. Surname
      3. Date of Birth
      4. Gender
      5. email address (of competitor)
      6. Class
      7. Swim time
      8. Pool length
      9. Run time
  3. On submission, the following will happen:
    1. A check for the existence of the competitor in our database will be made, based on first name, surname, DoB, gender. Please do your utmost to spell names correctly and provide correct dates of birth. For those identified, the membership number will be retrieved and the form populated. For those not identified a new 'First Steps' membership will be created for that individual.
    2. Run and swim times will be validated based on a range of 'reasonable' values held for each class.

Confirmed dates for the Pentathlon GB organised competitions or time trials that you may enter in order to gain run and swim times for submission to one of the semi-finals rankings lists can be found on the calendar page of the website. If you are organising a time trial of your own and would like to invite other Schools, Clubs to take part, please let Sue Hyde have details so they can be posted on the website.

The run and swim times submitted together with the results from the semi-finals and finals will be sent for inclusion on the World Schools' Biathlon Rankings List maintained by UIPM. The results for 2011 can be accessed here.

Please click here to register and submit times.

Qualification for the Semi-Final Championships

The closing date for submission of entries to the Semi-Finals rankings lists is 16th November 2012. The rankings lists will be published on the rankings tab of this page on 23rd November 2012 and entries to the Semi-Finals Championships will be accepted online from 27th November 2012. The closing date for those invited to compete in each of the Semi-Final Championships is 5th January 2013. Athletes who have qualified to compete in the Semi-Final Championships will be listed online - we will not be sending out email confirmation.

  1. The following number of athletes in each class will be invited from the Ranking Lists to compete in their pre-selected Semi-Final Championship:
    1. 72 athletes in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8
    2. 48 athletes in Year 9
    3. 40 athletes in Years 10/11 & Years 12/13
    4. 8 teachers
  2. Those who qualify for a Semi-Final Championship will have to formally enter the competition online and pay the appropriate entry fee. Payment will be by card online or by cheque and cheques should be made payable to Pentathlon GB.
  3. If a qualified individual is not able to enter the Semi-Final Championships for whatever reason, the next ranked individual may be invited to participate in their place.
  4. In the Semi-Final and British Championships, the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class will create a team. A school may have more than one team in a class.
  5. When compiling the rankings list, adjustments will be made to take account of swim times achieved in 25m and 50m swimming pools as below:
SWIMMING - CONVERSION TABLE
POOL LENGTH 100m SWIM 50m SWIM
50m to 25m - 1.1 second - 0.5 second
25m to 50m + 1.1 second + 0.5 second
Qualification for the British Championships
  1. In each class of the Semi-Final Championships the first 6 placed individuals and top team will qualify by right.
  2. A ranking list will be produced following the completion of the three Semi-Final Championships and the remaining team places will be allocated from the Team Rankings list to make up the total number of teams in each class to:
    1. Seven teams in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8
    2. Five teams in Year 9
    3. Four teams in Year 10/11 & Year 12/13
  3. The remaining places for British Championships will be allocated from the individual ranking list to make up the total number of athletes in each class to:
    1. 72 athletes in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8
    2. 48 athletes in Year 9
    3. 40 athletes in Year 10/11 & Year 12/13
    4. 8 Teachers
  4. In all competitions, the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class will count as a team. This means that if the School has more than three qualifying individuals in a class, the team members may change from the semi-final championships.
  5. If a qualified individual or team is not able to enter the British Championships for whatever reason, the next ranked individual or team may be invited to participate in their place.
  6. When compiling the rankings list, adjustments will be made to take account of swim times achieved in 25m and 50m swimming pools as per the table above.

A copy of the revised Schools' Modern Biathlon Rules 2012 will be available from the resources section of the website with effect from 1st June 2012.

The Rules contain important information including competition dates, points tables and qualification criteria. You are strongly recommended to download and read these Rules before entering the competition.

Cancellation

Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions, Pentathlon GB had to cancel two semi-final competitions in 2011-12. As this decision was made for reasons beyond our control and for the safety of all concerned, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions there was no refund of entry fees. T-shirts were posted to those who had pre-ordered them.

Further consideration was given to insuring the semi-finals and Championships against cancellation. Unfortunately, quotations were prohibitively expensive and would have resulted in Pentathlon GB having to almost double the entry fee to make the schools series break even financially. Increasing the entry fees would be detrimental to the whole schools programme, so the same Terms and Conditions will apply for the 2012-13 series. If Schools are concerned about this, we suggest that they consider insuring themselves against loss in the event of cancellation.

Rearranging competitions in such circumstances is impossible as venues, officials and often athletes are simply not available on alternative dates. As a result of this, if any competitions in 2012-13 have to be cancelled, the submitted run and swim times for those entered into the cancelled competition(s) will be added to times achieved at the competitions which do take place to produce the rankings list for the British Championships.

If you have any questions, please check the FAQ section of this page. If this does not resolve your query please do not hesitate to contact our headquarters in Bath on 01225 386808.

Young athletes shine at Schools Modern Biathlon Championships Sunday, 24th Mar 2013 Steve Ballinger

Hampshire schoolgirl Emily Jenkinson collected an impressive seventh successive title at the Pentathlon GB British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships in London today (Sunday).

The 16-year-old’s success was one of the highlights of a day that saw around 700 young athletes battle it out against each other – and the weather - for titles at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

There was also a title apiece for the Sinha sisters – Sabrina and Natasha – and a fourth title in the last five years for Alexander Allen, a pupil at Millfield School in Somerset.

Emily Jenkinson (pictured) from Southampton has dominated her year group at the championships since winning the Year 6 title back in 2007.

Now a pupil at Peter Symonds College in Winchester, she came third in her 100m swim today and set the fastest time in the Year 11/12 girls’ 1000m run to make sure of her seventh title.

She plans to return to the competition for the last time next year with the aim of making it eight in a row.

“I wasn’t expecting this many titles, to be honest,” she said. “I’m a bit shocked that I’ve won so many.

“The run wasn’t easy this year, it was a lot colder than I expected, but I’m really pleased that I won again.”

Earlier in the day Bromley High School pupil Sabrina Sinha won the Year 8 girls’ title – her second title in two years. Moments later her sister, Natasha, a pupil at James Allens Girls School in London, took the Year 9 title – her third in a row.

And there was a fourth title in the last five years for Millfield School pupil Alexander Allen. He dominated the competition, knocking a second off his personal best to win the 100m freestyle swim and then setting the fastest time in the 1000m run too.

Alexander has now won titles in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 – he missed out in 2010 when a heavy cold forced him to withdraw from the competition.

This year, just for good measure, he joined forces with James Rustom and Jason Haw to win the Year 10 & 11 boys’ team title for Millfield School.

“The swim went really well with a one-second personal best. It was just a case of sticking with them in the run then, I knew it was in my grasp,” he said. “We really wanted to win this team title this year, we haven’t done that for a while.”

The first winner of the day was Tom Randolph of the Landau Free Academy at Tamworth. Eighth after the swim, he produced a strong 1000m run in the stadium to win the boys’ Year 9 title.  Randolph had taken silver in the Year 8 competition last year.

After the event Jon Austin, Chief Executive Officer of Pentathlon GB, paid tribute to everyone who helped make the championships such a big success again this year.

“It’s been an enormous challenge to pull the championships together in the current weather conditions,” he said.

“I would particularly like to thank Sue Hyde our National Competitions and Events Manager, who, despite the uncertainties over the weather, remained resolutely determined to make sure the championships took place.

“I’d also like to thank all of the volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the event happened today, as well as the schools, parents and athletes for showing the commitment to making the championships the successful event it has proved to be over the years.

“Thanks too for everyone at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre for their support in making sure the competition could go ahead.”

The schools biathlon is run by Pentathlon GB, the national governing body for the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon, and gives young athletes an opportunity to have a go at a multi-sport competition featuring a run and a swim. They could also try out fencing and shooting at taster sessions.

This year young athletes also got the opportunity to meet Heather Fell, who won modern pentathlon silver for Great Britain at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Heather, who presented medals and trophies to many of this year’s winners, said: “Being involved with the championships this year really brought back fond memories. It was great to be a part of it today and to meet so many talented young athletes.”

Barbara Woodward, Director General of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and a member of the Pentathlon GB Board, also made a number of presentations.

Some former participants have gone on to represent Great Britain on the senior international circuit.  They include Jamie Cooke, Britain’s 2011 world junior champion and Joe Evans, who won bronze on his World Cup debut in California a month ago. Both are currently in Rio for the second World Cup of the year.

There were individual and team awards up for grabs in each year group from Year 5 up to Years 12/13.

Year 5, 6 and 7 pupils and teachers complete a 50m swim and a 500m run, with Years 8 to 13 pupils tackling a 100m swim and 1000m run.

Schools' Biathlon Update Saturday, 23rd Mar 2013 Sue Hyde

The School's Biathlon Championships will go ahead as planned on Sunday 24th March.  Light snow is currently falling at Crystal Palace but it is not settling on hard ground.  Should the track be covered in snow we will endeavor to clear it manually in the morning (feel free to help if you're there early).  Contingency plans are being made for the run to be held on grass should the track be unusable.  Spikes are very much recommended as conditions could be slippery.  Take care driving and most of all be safe.  The car park close to Crystal Palace gets full very quickly so please make use of the main car park accessed to the left of the main entrance.

Before travelling, please ensure that you check the competition entries page to make sure that your school appears on the drop down list of entered schools and that the membership number of athletes who are expecting to compete are listed.

We our glad to announce Pentathlon GB South are hosting its next Regional Development Training Camp at Lord Wandsworth College, Long Sutton, Hampshire on Tuesday 28th – Thursday 30th May.

The camp will run from 0930-1500 each day and will consist of Running, Swimming, Fencing and Shooting (static and combined) and is aimed at athletes 9+. The aim of the camp is to develop each individual as an all round Pentathlete. Each day will consist of 1 hour of running, 1 hour of fencing, 1 hour of shooting and 1 hour of swimming. The three days will be very tiring, however we believe in quality not quantity. This training schedule will ensure the camp is very rewarding for all the athletes attending.

I will be lead the camp and my aim is to pass on the knowledge I gained while I was a member of the Great Britain Modern Pentathlon Team. Our Regional Fencing Coach Ian Briggs, will once again be joining us on this camp to offer his expertise in the fencing salle.

Schools' Biathlon Rules

The rules for the Schools' Biathlon 2012-13 season of events will be available from the Resources page from the beginning of June.

In summary, the principles of the competition is as follows:

  • each school year group competes separately apart from Years 10 and 11 which, from next season, will compete as a single age group and Years 12 and 13 who also compete together.
  • the run and swim are completed separately, ie it is not a continuous run/swim
  • distances vary depending on year group, but Years 5,6 and 7 and Teachers run 500m and swim 50m, remaining year groups run 1000m and swim 100m.
  • scoring is based on run and swim times being converted to points. Each year group has to acheive a target time to gain 1000 points. Times faster or slower than the target time result in an increase or decrease in points. See the rule book on the Resources page for the details.

The rules are detailed and should be read and understood before competing.

Schools' Biathlon Championships 2013 - Ranking Lists

Ranking lists for the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships have now been produced and can be viewed by choosing from the options below.

When compiling the rankings list, in accordance with the rules, adjustments have been made to swim times achieved at a pool where the length is different from the one in which the final will be held. This applies to the Macclesfield semi-final where 25m times have been adjusted for a 50m pool. The adjustments are as per the table below.

SWIMMING - CONVERSION TABLE
POOL LENGTH 100m SWIM 50m SWIM
50m to 25m - 1.1 second - 0.5 second
25m to 50m + 1.1 second + 0.5 second

In each Class of the Semi-Final Championships the first 6 placed individuals and top team qualified by right.

The remaining team places were allocated from the Team Rankings list to make up the total number of teams in each Class to:

  1. Seven teams in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8.
  2. Five teams in Year 9.
  3. Four teams in Years 10/11 & Years 12/13.

The remaining places for British Championships were allocated from the individual ranking list to make up the total number of athletes in each Class to:

  1. 72 athletes in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8
  2. 48 athletes in Year 9
  3. 40 athletes in Years 10/11 & Years 12/13
  4. 8 teachers

Athletes who have a 'Q' next to their name on the ranking list have qualified for the British Championships as individuals. ‘QT’ denotes that the athlete has qualified as a member of a team.

Qualified athletes must be entered into the competition online – a ‘Q’ or a ‘QT’ against their name does not mean that they have been entered, just that they have qualified for a place at the British Championships.

Athletes who fell just outside the individual ranking places and have the same total points as the last individual athlete to qualify in their class are also granted qualification status.

The closing date for online entries is 5th March 2013. Those who fall just outside the ranking places should continue to monitor their qualification status until 8th March as we will create additional qualifiers if we are notified of withdrawals by qualified athletes or if places aren’t taken up.

Please Note: : Run and swim times cannot be updated under any circumstances.

Entries can only be made online and will open on 11th February 2013. Entries must be made by the person who submitted the original run and swim times. You will need to login to the website here using the user name and password created when submitting the run and swim times for the ranking lists. If you have forgotten your password, click on the 'Forgotten Password' link on the login page.

The entry fee for each athlete is £15. Teachers enter for free. Commemorative Championships T-shirts (in azure blue) can also be ordered at £10 each.

In all competitions, the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class are automatically created as a team by the results system. Therefore there is no need for the school to nominate team members. This means that if the School has more than three qualifying individuals in a class, the team members may change from the previous qualifying round. There is no entry fee for teams.

If you enter online but choose to pay by cheque later, please make cheques payable to 'Pentathlon GB' and ensure they arrive before the closing date, 5th March. A single cheque must be submitted for the full amount of your entries and any t-shirts ordered.

After you have entered you will be able to check that your entries have been received on the 'Competition Entries' tab of the Schools section of the website.

The closing date is 5th March and will be strictly adhered to - the web page will close after that date and it will not be possible to make late entries.

Semi Final 1 - Crystal Palace

Semi-Final 1 was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Therefore the run and swim times submitted for inclusion on the rankings list have been used to compile individual and team competition results.

The top 6 individuals and top team in each class (except teachers) automatically qualify for the British Championships, others will be invited from the rankings list in accordance with the Rules.

It was possible to submit updated times through the online entry system until 15th November and many chose to do so. There will not be any further up-dating of times for any individual under any circumstances so please don’t ask as there was ample opportunity prior to the closing date. This is to maintain overall fairness to all competitors. There has been no global ‘uplifting’ of times to account for possible improvements since the rankings list closed as the analysis of submitted times vs actual results last year showed that there was a variation of +/- 3% ie competition neutral as some improved their times at the competition and others achieved competition times that were slower than their submitted times.

Typically there is a 10% ‘no-show’ rate. However all competitors entered into the competition will be put onto the rankings list for the British Championships alongside those of those who compete in the other semi-finals.

Question Answer
I have never done a biathlon before. Am I going to be the only beginner? Definitely not! This competition is open to ALL school children attending schools in England, Northern Ireland and Wales (Scotland will organise their own championships), and therefore lots of the children who enter will never have done a biathlon before. Pentathlon GB firmly believes the Schools' Modern Biathlon offers young people of all abilities a fantastic opportunity to participate in multi-sport in an enjoyable, safe and competitive environment.
What are the distances? Years 5, 6 and 7 (and Teachers) - Swim 50m, Run 500m. Years 8,9,10/11, 12/13 - Swim 100m, Run 1000m
There is no time trial in my area, can you help my school to organise one? Our Pentathlon Development Officers will be happy to assist your school to run their own time trial. If you wish to do this, please get in touch with us at schools@pentathlongb.org
Is the run/swim continuous? No. The run and swim are separate with no transition. There is generally a break of around 40 mins between the disciplines, giving the athletes time to get changed and report to thier next event. This makes it ideal for athletes who are not familiar with multisports and transition areas.
Do the run and swim times have to be done on the same day? No. As long as you submit them before the closing date, the run and swim can be done on different days at any time between June 1st 2012 and November 16th 2012.
Are athletes able to record their swim times in any size pool? No. All swim times MUST be achieved in either 25m or 50m pools. These will be converted by Pentathlon GB to the pool length of the semi-final competition.
Can I submit times which were achieved before June 1st 2012? No. All times must be achieved between June 1st 2012 and November 16th 2012.
My school are not participating and I'm not in a swimming or athletics club. What can I do? There are a number of events listed on the Schools' calendar that you can enter to obtain run and swim times which can then be submitted to your chosen semi-finals rankings list. Go to www.pentathlongb/schools and then select the calendar tab to find a competition or time trial near you. If you can't find one near you, get in touch with us at schools@pentathlongb.org and we will do our best to advise you of alternative options.
My school does not have a pool, can I do my swim at my swimming club? Yes. As long as your times are validated by your swimming coach and the pool is either 25m or 50m.
We haven't received any details in the post... We don't post out details as we found it wasn't reliable. Please check the website for a list of entries received. Details of the competition times will be put up on the website approximately one week after the closing date of the competition. Being on the website makes it easier for both parents and teachers to check the details.
Can my parents submit my run and swim times or do I have to enter through the school? Your parents can make the online entry, but they can not validate your run and swim times. Times must be validated by a coach, teacher or independent adult who is not related to the athlete. Pentathlon GB reserve the right to make checks on times submitted.
Will you adjust the run times if done on grass? No. Run times can be achieved on track or grass, however there should be every effort to ensure that the proposed run route is level and that the correct distance is measured. There will be no allowances made for runs completed on grass or weather conditions due to the huge variances of both.
A year 4 pupil wants to enter - she has taken part in local Pentathlon GB events in the past. Can she compete up a year? No. The Schools' Biathlon is only open to Years 5-13, and all athletes must compete in their correct year group for their age.
Are the classes mixed? No. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the classes are by Age and Gender, so Year 6 Girls, Year 6 Boys, etc, are separate.
Can I enter by fax, 'phone, post or email? No. All entries will be online at www.pentathlongb.org/schools
When I register online do I use my name, or the name of the athlete I am entering? Use YOUR name and registration number to create a login online. Once you have logged into your personal area on the website, you will be able to submit times for consideration for the ranking lists. When the qualifers for the semi finals and final have been announced you should login using YOUR login details and the names of all the athletes you wish to enter will be visible to you. This is to make it easier for teachers or parents who are entering multiple athletes.
How many can we enter per class? As many or few as you wish. We welcome one or a hundred. The only limit is the maximum venue capacity!
We don't have a team, does this matter? Not at all - all the children are entered initially as individuals and, if there are enough from the school in their class, may be made up into a team depending on their score. However, they all start as individuals.
I go to swimming club with two friends who are the same age as me, but they don't go to my school. Can we be in the same team? No. Teams are formed from the top three scoring individuals from each gender and school year who all attend the same School.
Do I have to buy a t-shirt? No, it's entirely optional. Please remember though that we do not sell extra shirts on the day, so if you would like one, you need to order and pay for it when you send your entry form in.
Do the children have to be members of Pentathlon GB? Yes, each child has to be a member. When swim and run times are submitted to go on the ranking lists for consideration for the Semi-final competitions any athlete who is not already a member will be granted 'First Steps' membership, free of charge. If you are successful in qualifying for a Semi-final competition you will be granted junior membership for a year when you enter.
Can you accept entries by fax or scanned and emailed? No, for the 2012-13 series of Schools' Biathlon competitions all entries must be made online, athough payment may be made by cheque after you have completed the online entries. Please note however, if you choose to pay by cheque, your entries will not be accepted into the competition unless we receive the cheque at Pentathlon GB HQ, Wessex House (6.11), University of Bath, Bath. BA2 7AY by the closing date. If your cheque does not arrive by the closing date your competitors will not be able to compete and you will not be able to transfer your entries to another competition.
Does the school have to pay any affiliation fees? No, the school does not have to pay any affiliation or club membership fees.
How do I check if my entry has been received? Go to the website www.pentathlongb.org and click on the 'Schools' Tab at the top right. Look for the 'Competition Entries' tab where you will be able to see the entries recieved.
If I registered online last season, will I have to register again? No. You should login using the username and password you created when you first registered.
How do I find out my registration time? Will you email me these details? No. The timetable will be posted on the schools page of the website after the closing date. We will not email you at all, other than to confirm your entry. All other notifications will be posted online so you are therefore advised to check the website regularly for updates.
If there are any changes to the competition or timetable which may affect my athletes, will you notify me of these changes by email? No. All notifications will be posted on the website so you are advised to check this regularly.
If an athlete's run and swim times have been submitted by the school/club and they qualify for the semi final, does the school/club have to continue with the entry process or can a parent enter them instead? The person who initially registered online and submitted the times will have to continue the process as only they would know their login details and password. If they choose to disclose these to another person, please be advised that in cases where more than one athlete has been entered, all of these entries will be the responsibility of the person logging in as they will not be transferrable once in the system. This may also pose a security risk as their personal details, and those of the all the athletes entered from that school/club, would then be visible to this person. For more information please call head office on 01225 386808.
My teacher submitted my run and swim times online but has now left the school. What do I do? Call head office on 01225 386808 and we will be able to help you.
I want to enter but have missed the closing date... We're very sorry, but we cannot take late entries under any circumstances and for any reason. This is not a negotiable position.
I forgot to order a t-shirt when I entered online - can I do this afterwards or collect one on the day? No. Commerative t-shirts are only available by pre-order and this must be done when the online entries are made. However, there will be Pentathlon GB merchandise on sale at the semi-finals and British Championships.
Does the school need to send a teacher? No, a parent can attend instead. Only one representative from each school should report to registration to collect all of the information for that school.
Where do I get my run numbers and programme? They are all in the Registration Pack when you arrive at the venue. Registration is alphabetically by School, and we ask that one designated person collects the pack.
We've ordered a t-shirt - where do we collect it? T-shirt slips are in the Registration Pack (one per school, collected on the day of competition at Registration, by the designated adult) - you will be able to then exchange these slips for your t-shirt at a nearby table. Please do not lose the slip as we do not carry extra! You can collect the t-shirt anytime after you've picked up your slip from registration.
Is there a cafe at the venue? All the venues have either cafes, snack bars or dispensing machines, BUT they do frequently get very busy. We strongly recommend that people take food and drink with them, as spending the time between disciplines queueing is not ideal.
Can I buy Pentathlon GB merchandise at the semi-finals and final? Yes. A full range of merchandise will be on sale at all semi-finals and the final. We accept credit/ debit cards and cash payments.
If I am not travelling to the semi-final with my school group, once at the venue can I register without my teacher? You can, but we ask that ONE representative from your school collects the run numbers for all of the athletes, and this is usually the first person to arrive. It does not have to be a teacher, it can be a parent if they are happy to take responsibility. This person must sign to acknowledge that they have taken the registration pack, and leave a mobile number so that other athletes arriving can contact this person to collect their run number. Please note that we DO NOT split the regsitration packs, they go out as one pack, with one person. It is therefore a good idea to organise with your teacher who will pick up the pack before you get to the venue.
I've got my registration time but I might be late. Does it matter if I'm not there exactly on time? The registration times are when the registration for your class opens. However we strongly recommend you are there as close to time as possible as you will need around 30 - 40 minutes before your first event starts to get parked, registered, sort out where you are going, get changed and report in to the marshals.
How is the final place decided? The athlete is awarded so many 'Pentathlon Points' for their Run and Swim times. These points are added together to give the final place.
Will you email me if the competition has been cancelled? No. All notifications will be posted on the website so you are advised to check this regularly particularly if there weather conditions are poor.
Will I get a refund if the competition is cancelled? If the competition is cancelled for reasons within our control, each athlete entered into that competition will be offered an alternative competition (where possible) and in default a full refund. If the decision to cancel is made because of circumstances beyond the control of Pentathlon GB, e.g. adverse weather conditions or the strong possibility of adverse weather conditions, there will be no refund. If schools are concerned about this, we suggest that they consider insuring themselves against loss in the event of cancellation.
If the competition is cancelled, will there be a replacement competition? No. Rearranging competitions in such circumstances is impossible as venues and officials are simply not available at such short notice. In the event of a cancellation, the submitted run and swim times for those entered into the cancelled competition will be added to those who went ahead to produce the rankings list for the British Championships.
My school requires an invoice/receipt... Please contact the office as soon as you can and we will arrange this for you. Our number is 01225 386808 and the email is admin@pentathlongb.org
