Anti Doping - Change to urine testing process posted by Peter Hart on23-08-2010

There has been a slight change to the testing procedure for urine.

The changes affect the sample division element of the test and take effect immediately.

  1. Both A and B sample bottles should now be opened at the same time before the sample is divided.

  1. The sample will be first added to bottle B and filled up to the laser line on the blue label.

  1. The remainder of the sample should then be poured into the A bottle, but no further than the ridge above the red label.

  1. If there is any urine remaining, it should be poured into the B bottle, but no further than the ridge above the blue label.

  1. Any urine left after this, will be discarded at the end of the test by the athlete in full view of the DCO.

The changes provide greater flexibility when filling the sample bottles up to the requisite level and will ensure the maximum volume of urine provided by the athlete is used.

if an athlete notices the process is not being followed they should record it on the Sample Collection Form

Should you have any questions about this change, or other anti doping matters please don't hesitate to contact me.

Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games posted by Laura Gomersall on21-08-2010

The modern pentathlon team assembled at Holiday Inn Heathrow, with the rest of the 39 Team GB athletes who were about to embark on their journey to Singapore to take part in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.  The MP team were kitted-out with their official Team GB Olympic village wear, supplied by Adidas and bonded with the other athletes and officials from 16 other sports and 18 disciplines.  Following kitting-out, Vancouver 2010 bob skeleton gold medalist Amy Williams,  Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton and our very own Athens 2004 bronze medalist Georgina Harland  inspired the team, recounting stories of their respective achievements.

Upon arrival in Singapore, after the 13 hour flight, the team was greeted by the BOA's advance party including Chef de Mission, Jan Paterson.  They were then taken to the Olympic Village where they had to validate their accreditation which allows them access to all aspects of 'Olympic life" - accommodation areas, transport, training and competition venues but most importantly the dining hall!

Team GB have set up their normal Games time operation with an HQ office providing our first point of contact for any queries and questions we may have, along with a 5 strong team of excellent physio and medical care.

The Olympic Village itself is huge, with 2 main areas - the ‘Village Square’ (VS) and Residential zone (RZ).  The VS is where you can find everything from the Sport Information desk to the dining hall, a bank, and even hair dressers!  The Square also houses most of the Culture and Education Programme (CEP) activities on offer.  With athletes from 204 National Olympic Committee’s fully engaging in all activities it helps to create a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Within the Residential Zone, Team GB is housed in a block sharing with Venezuela, Namibia, Sri Lanka and Burkina Faso.  Evenings can sometimes be slightly noisy with our South American neighbours but adds to experiencing the Olympic value of cultural understanding!

The Opening Ceremony was an amazing experience at ‘The Float’ (a floating stage) at Marina Bay in central Singapore.  Team GB was proudly led out by sprinter David Bolarinwa and after the athlete parade, joined the rest of the audience to enjoy the celebrations culminating in fireworks and the lighting of the Olympic flame.

After some good sleep and light aerobic work in the first few days, Greg’s final training period has gone very smoothly.  He has hit all training times asked of him and has adapted well to the new laser pistol format.  He goes into tomorrow’s Boys individual final on a high after achieving 3 A*s at A level!  He feels in top form and is looking forward to the challenge ahead competing on a World stage.

24 boys will contest the Youth Olympic Games Modern Pentathlon Competition tomorrow at Singapore Sports School.

KATE ALLENBY NAMED AS A MEMBER OF THE BOA ATHLETES’ COMMISSION  posted by Peter Hart on08-07-2010

A group of 14 athletes, who among them can draw upon combined experience of 33 Olympic Games, have today been named as the members of the newly formed British Olympic Association (BOA) Athletes' Commission.

The members comprise a mix of ten summer and four winter Olympians, with 12 different Olympic sport disciplines represented. Nine of the athletes are still active competitors aiming for London 2012 or Sochi 2014, while five have retired within the last two Olympiads.

The members will be led by three-time Olympian rower Sarah Winckless, who was recently appointed as the first BOA Athletes" Commission Chair and will be responsible for feeding the views of the Commission into the BOA Board, of which she is a member.

The Commission is an advisory group that has been created to bring the perspective and expertise of the athletes to provide input to the many initiatives and programmes offered by the BOA. Its creation followed a recommendation from the International Olympic Committee Congress last year to ensure that athletes possess a meaningful voice in the decision-making process of National Olympic Committees.

Andy Hunt, BOA Chief Executive said:
"I am very pleased that the composition of the new BOA Athletes’ Commission reflects such a great wealth and diversity of Olympic experience. The calibre of athletes who put themselves forward is a tribute to the determination of British athletes to support their fellow Team GB Olympians. The BOA will benefit greatly from the insights and perspective delivered by the members of the Athletes’ Commission and I look forward to welcoming their input at BOA Board level through the Commission Chair, Sarah Winckless.”
