Former Competitor Returns as Volunteer at 2026 Schools Biathlon Championships

A former Schools Biathlon Finals competitor has returned to the event—this time as a volunteer—bringing her journey full circle seven years after first taking part in the national competition.

Jasmine, who competed in the 2019 Schools Biathlon Championships, recalls the experience as one that left a lasting impression. She first qualified through a local qualifying event before heading to the national stage, where the vibrant atmosphere and inspiring athletic spirit stayed with her.

“I really enjoyed the swim, and I felt really inspired to be surrounded by so many aspiring athletes,” she said. “Watching the older year groups compete was also very fun, and I enjoyed cheering on the other competitors once my racing was complete.”

For her, the highlight of the Finals wasn’t just the competition itself, but the sense of community that came with it. “My favourite thing about the Schools’ Biathlon Finals is that young people from all over the country get to meet up and have a weekend of competition,” she explained. “I really enjoyed the experience—not just competing myself, but also watching the medal ceremonies and all the other aspects that come with attending the Finals.”

Those fond memories are what motivated her to volunteer at this year’s event. She described the decision as a way to give back to a competition that meant so much to her growing up.

“I know what a great day competing at the finals was for 12‑year‑old me, so being a part of this event for young people feels like a way to give back,” she said. “I haven’t competed recently, so this is also an opportunity for me to reconnect with the sport.”

As hundreds of young athletes prepare to take to the pool and track, she shared her advice for this year’s finalists: “Go out there and do your best—the most important thing is that you have fun! You should all feel very proud that you’ve made it to the finals.”

She also encourages others to consider volunteering at future Pentathlon GB competitions, highlighting the rewarding nature of supporting the next generation of athletes.

“My advice to anyone interested in volunteering is to go ahead and sign up. You have nothing to lose, and being a part of an event that creates an environment for hundreds of young athletes to learn and develop is very special,” she said. “I know first-hand the amazing impact that this can have. I hope to see you at the next competition!”

We’re looking forward to welcoming the 2026 Finalists to Bath this weekend as they look to follow in the footsteps of previous athletes, such as Jasmine. Who knows where competing at this years’ championships will lead the crop of 2026 finalists. We look forward to finding out!
