The Great British Schools Biathlon Championships proved to be a spectacular showcase of athleticism, determination and teamwork, as over 900 young athletes from more than 260 schools nationwide put their running and swimming ability to the test.
The high-energy event, held at the home of Pentathlon GB at the University of Bath, celebrated the dedication, talent, and achievements of all our Schools Biathlon finalists. Throughout the autumn school term, athletes from across the country competed at local Schools Biathlon qualifier events organised by a network of PGB affiliated schools, clubs and hubs. Athletes from year 3 up until sixth form/ year 12 and 13 (not forgetting some teachers and school staff!) recorded their qualifying score in their local competitions, with all athletes’ individual cumulative run and swim points scores then added to the National Rankings List. Their rankings place gave them the foothold to try and qualify for the Schools Biathlon flagship competition.
With over 200 medals awarded in the Schools Biathlon Championships, competitors also had the opportunity to test their skills in all five Pentathlon events across the weekend. We were joined by local club and hub coaches to help provide taster sessions in Laser Shooting and Fencing to all attendees, added to the opportunity to compete over the Obstacle course at our PentaOCR facility, broadening their interest and experience within our sport. These sessions enhanced the bustle and excitement in our event village offering families, spectators and athletes the chance to sample the buzzing atmosphere in between their running and swimming events.
It was great to have local Sport England Sport Welfare Officers (SWOs) join us for the championships weekend, providing safeguarding and general event support to all attendees. A huge thank you to the SWOs from Active Partnerships in Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and West England who joined us in Bath to promote the benefits of sport through the amazing achievements of all our competing athletes. Spectators, parents and teachers cheered on our participants as they pushed themselves to the limit, striving for the chance to take home the Schools Biathlon crown. After a weekend of intense races and incredible performances, 22 individual champions and gold medal winning teams were crowned, marking a memorable showcase of sporting success.
It was amazing to celebrate our qualified finalists, medallists, and champions throughout the weekend, and we cannot wait to see more of your celebrations through your schools over the coming weeks!
The championships reinforced the spirit of perseverance and teamwork, setting the stage for future champions to emerge.
