Pentathlon GB, British Obstacle Sports and Youth Sport Trust have launched Obstacle Explorers, a new national initiative designed to bring fun, creativity and inclusivity into school sport and physical activity. The programme invites 500 schools across the UK to take part in a fresh approach to movement, combining teamwork, outdoor play and creative challenges.

Developed with schools, young people and exercise physiologists, Obstacle Explorers encourages children of all abilities to get active and explore movement in new ways. Using a series of activity cards and challenges, the programme supports the development of key physical skills while making activity engaging and accessible.

Pilot schools have already seen strong results. Pupils at Pontlliw Primary School in Swansea said the experience “doesn’t feel like a lesson – it feels like playing,” highlighting the programme’s ability to make physical activity more enjoyable and inclusive.

The first 500 schools to sign up will receive free access to Obstacle Explorers resources and recognition as Founding Obstacle Schools, with opportunities to take part in a full-size obstacle course experience.

The initiative also connects to the future of Modern Pentathlon, which will introduce obstacle as its fifth discipline at the LA 2028 Olympic Games, helping to create new pathways into sport for young people.

Will Brown, CEO at Pentathlon GB, said: “Obstacle Explorers offers a powerful way to introduce young people to the skills and excitement of an Olympic sport… we can inspire more children to discover movements they enjoy.”

Schools can find out more and sign up to become one of the first 500 Founding Schools here.
